Annie

STORY

It's 1933 and Annie is living in the municipal orphanage in New York’s Lower East Side. Miss Hannigan is the mean-spirited principal in charge of the orphanage. Grace Farrell, secretary to billionairre Oliver Warbucks, invites Annie back to the Warbucks’s household to celebrate Christmas. Warbucks takes to Annie and uses the Bert Healy radio show to offer a reward of $50,000 to anyone who can prove they are Annie’s parents. Miss Hannigan’s brother Rooster and he and his girlfriend, Lily St Regis, suggest that they claim Annie as their daughter and thus the reward that goes with the information. Just where does Annie belong?

REVIEWS

Annie: the cure for Depression
Herts Mercury Magazine review

"The staging was well thought out and there were some impressive sets, from the grim darkness of the orphanage dormitory to the marble staircase in Daddy Warbucks’s Fifth Avenue mansion."

"Jo-Anne Wesley as the gin-soaked orphanage principal, Miss Hannigan, stole every scene she was in, and the high-kicking rivalry between her and gangster’s moll Lily St Regis (Madeline Stoller) was hilarious."

"Eleven year old Shannon Knights played Annie and played her well – endearing without being overbearing and with a credible New York accent. Her rendition of Maybe, her dream that her parents will one day return for her, was particularly moving."
