In September 2013 EHOS presented the pioneer of modern musicals: ‘RENT’.
This heavy hitting show with a unique vibrant style tackles compelling themes such as friendship, love, life and death.
Set in East Village in Manhattan, RENT focuses on modern-day Bohemian characters and their lives as they deal with issues such as AIDS, homophobia, poverty, and drug addiction.
With a mixture of sweet melodies and power ballads, this modern musical is already seen as a classic!
STORY
Based loosely on Puccini’s “La Boheme”, Rent tells the story of a group of friends struggling with love, drugs and AIDS.
Amongst the group are the narrator and film-maker, Mark; his former lover, Maureen; Maureen’s lesbian lover Joanne; Mark’s room mate and HIV+ former drug addict, Roger; Roger’s lover the HIV+ junkie and exotic dancer, Mimi; their former room mate HIV+ computer genius, Tom Collins; Collins’ HIV+ drag queen street musician lover Angel; and Benjamin Coffin III a former member of the group who, after marrying a wealthy woman, has since become their landlord and the opposite of the group’s Bohemian values.
The show deals with tragedy, redemption, and the sense of hope as the intertwined relationships of the friends unfold. A refreshing change of style from the ‘traditional’ musical shows!
